No loose ends on the dyno

Someone’s in the garage with dyno

AJ Performance with 1999 Honda Civic on dynoIn my last post, I gave an overview of our first customer dyno session. John McBride, of West Palm Beach, wanted to see how well his brand new Skunk2 cams would improve his 1999 Honda Civic. So it was with much excitement on both his part to see his car run, and we at AJP to see our dyno perform, that we spent the better part of our Fourth of July watching the car-dyno pair work together, not unlike watching Olympic ice-skating couples.

Honda Civic, rear strapsWe learned early on that everything had to be strapped or tightened down. The big orange floor fan met an early demise after the first run rattled it off the dyno onto the floor. On the other hand, the car was well anchored to the dyno. Big, strong straps with robust connectors on both the front and back of the vehicle connected to clips bolted into the floor. We were slightly humored by a colleague who came in and said, “I parked my van right in front so when the car flies off, it will run straight into the van.” He should leave the jokes to the comedians.

Dyno rear straps and connector close up After multiple dyno runs, the car was still anchored tightly – no hint of loosening whatsoever. Here is aDyno front strap clip close up of the rear straps. This end is secure. With the other end connected to clips drilled into the floor or dyno chassis, this car is staying put.

It’s easy to forget that big engines at high speed can do damage. Here is a dyno video (not AJP at all) in which somebody did not prepare properly:

What do you think?
