The AJP shop car had no problem making its presence felt in the middle of a packed parking lot and gas station. Somewhere in Hialeah Gardens, FL, is a place where hundreds of people congregate to show off their cars.

Oscar’s friend Sandor signaled Ron to go for it and for a few minutes, Ron revved it, generating a crowd around the car. It was the perfect advertisement for our Dyno Day.

As midnight approached, the trickle of cars became a stready stream, crawling through the parking lot. Ron and I left at 1am and we found out later that some people left at 4am. On a weekday.

A meet this size is not without its unusual characters. One of them is Ralph, a former Marine who prides himself in being a “single cam” guy. His 1996 Civic (with the 1999 rear end) boasts an eclectic collection of modifications.

One of them is the Mercury Cougar leather bucket seats installed in the back. “They fit perfectly,” was his explanation. A baby seat takes up one of those spaces.

Ralph also installed a rear-facing camera where the trunk keyhole normally is positioned. The camera links up to the small LCD display mounted off his dashboard. His detachable steering wheel also attracts quizzical looks.
