Mitsubishi Evo VIII thunders to life

Mitsubishi Evo VIII frontBig horsepower came to the AJ Performance dyno late Thursday night, July 26. Mike had towed his carMitsubishi Evo VIII roll bars down from West Palm Beach, looking for some credible numbers from his race car. It had reached 700hp before and had a 9.8 quarter-mile under its belt, but was “detuned”, so he guessed he would get 650hp that night.

It had only a 2-liter engine, but had 35 pounds of boost, 5psi more than it had previously been boosted.

Mitsubishi Evo VIII back strapsThe first thing AJ Performance did was to secure the car with four straps in the back, two more than usual. With that much horsepower on two rollers, this all-wheel-drive car was much less stable than the two-wheel drive cars.Mitsubishi Evo VIII dyno numbers

Mike brought his own tuner, Chris, so AJ Performance was a spectator for this event. After much tinkering and fiddling, the car came to life, spinning both rollers. First, a test run up to 532hp, then the two big runs. In the video, watch the car rise as the tires spin faster and get taller. Check out the results – this is what $70,000 can get you (which works out to about $90/hp).

Thanks man. Yeah, it was amazing to see it churn out horsepower like it was nothing. It’s definitely not the average car on the dyno session.

It was definitely a different feel when you hear the pitch of the motor go up and you wonder how far it’s going to rise.

As a matter of fact, a tire balance weight flew off and hit the AJP mechanic, Rob, though with no injury. With Mike’s approval, Rob removed the rest of the weights before starting up again. Just something to keep in mind when watching a dyno session.

AJ Performance made sure everyone (a lot of Mike’s friends came to watch) stayed on the far side of the car. With that much horsepower on an elevated platform, we wanted to make sure that no one would be in immediate danger in case of a strap breakage.
